Joining GMCC
There are no formal qualifications for membership in GMCC. While some current members have had formal training in mental health services or allied fields, others have not. We look for volunteers who are good listeners and can offer empathetic support to clients in their journeys of self-discovery and personal growth.
Our peer counselors share a commitment to participate in GMCC's group meetings twice a month, which are designed to develop effective interpersonal and counseling skills. Membership requires participation in ongoing training.
Having had therapy or counseling oneself or having participated in other programs with similar goals is helpful to membership in our organization.
There is a significant time commitment for members. Meetings are held twice a month. In addition, each volunteer counselor sees clients, typically in the counselor’s home or office, for an average of one hour weekly.
Members are also expected to attend one professionally-facilitated retreat every year.
