GMCC
GMCC (originally the Gay Men’s Counseling Collective, and more recently the GMC Community) was founded in the early 1970's by seven gay men who wanted a support group for themselves and an opportunity to offer peer counseling to others. The group was a founding member of what is now Whitman-Walker Health. We provide counseling services to individuals and couples and offer occasional coming-out and personal growth groups.
Our original purpose was to provide an alternative to professional psychotherapy at a time when homosexuality was still considered a mental disorder by the American Psychiatric Association. Although the opportunities for gay-friendly professional therapy have greatly improved, many people continue to value the peer counseling alternative.
GMCC’s service to the LGBTQ community is matched by its commitment to personal growth and peer support for its own members. Through self-disclosure and feedback in a supportive environment, we challenge each other to grow towards greater self-awareness and wholeness. We view this process as integral to our work as peer counselors. It expresses our willingness to experience with each other the same challenges our clients face in their work with us.
GMCC currently consists of 8 volunteer peer counselors from DC, Maryland and Virginia.
